A numerical approach for designing composite cements with calcined clay and limestone

Abstract Many parameters such as clinker composition, clinker factors, type of the supplementary cementitious materials etc. need to be considered when formulating the composition of blended cement systems. In this study, a numerical framework has been developed for designing composite cements with calcined clay and limestone. It is seen that availability of portlandite becomes the limiting factor in highly substituted blended cement systems. Therefore, it will be beneficial to use lower grade calcined kaolinitic clays in blended cements with low clinker factors, and higher grade calcined kaolinitic clays in blended cements with high clinker factors. The numerical framework presented will be beneficial in designing an optimal blend composition of a given set of clinker, calcined clay and limestone, which can act as good starting point for extensive experimental programmes for understanding mechanical as well as durability characteristics.
