Pedagogical supplements to mechanical motion in rotating frames

The equation of motion of an object in a rotational frame is often confused with the equation of motion described by the polar coordinates in an inertial system, as demonstrated in a previous article (2008 Eur. J. Phys. 29 599–606). In this paper, explanations are supplemented to some misleading statements regarding the mechanical motion in rotating frames, and some additional descriptions regarding the relationships between the Cartesian coordinates and the polar coordinates in the same non-inertial frame are provided. Although centripetal and centrifugal forces are unrelated to Newton’s law of action–reaction, in the present article, the pairing of these forces is also interpreted as a type of action and reaction.
