This special issue of Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering contains selected papers presented at the 1st International Conference on Industrial Applications of Adhesives 2020 (IAA 2020), held in Funchal, Madeira (Portugal) during 5-6 March 2020. The goal of the conference was to provide a unique opportunity to exchange information, present the latest results as well as to discuss issues relevant to industrial applications of adhesives. This conference is held every two years. The conference is chaired by Lucas F. M. da Silva and cochaired by R. D. Adams (University of Oxford, UK), Chiaki Sato (Tokyo Institute of Technology) and Klaus Dilger (Technische Universit€at Braunschweig, Germany). The focus is on applications of adhesive bonding in the industry such as automotive, aeronautic, railway, marine, energy, electronics, etc. The idea is to bring together the adhesive makers and the adhesive users to exchange experiences and facilitate potential synergies and partnerships. 95 papers were presented by researchers from nearly 20 countries. In order to disseminate the work presented in IAA 2020, selected papers were prepared which resulted in the present volume dedicated to ‘Applications of adhesive bonding’. Various topics are covered resulting in six papers dealing with joint design of aerospace joints (first two papers), an innovative method to reinforce the surface of composite materials to avoid delamination when used in a bonded joint, life prediction methods of adhesive joints in terms of fatigue, structural health monitoring of aerospace joints by ultrasonic lamb waves, and methods to facilitate the repair of bonded joints with composite materials. The papers presented here are good examples of the latest trends related to the use of adhesive bonding in aerospace engineering. The editors wish to thank all the authors for their participation and cooperation, which made this volume possible. Finally, they would like to thank the team of SAGE, especially the Editor-in-Chief Prof Anton de Ruiter and Mr. Martin McDonald, for the excellent cooperation during the preparation of this volume.
