Nutritional and Medicinal Properties of Phyllanthus Acidus L. (Jimbilin)

ABSTRACT Phyllanthus acidus L. (jimbilin), a species within the Phyllanthaceae family has origins in Madagascar. The tree is now established as a native of the South American countries of Colombia and Brazil with wide distribution within tropical and sub-tropical countries. The fruit which is tart in taste has a greenish yellow exterior and a white to cream colored fleshy interior covering a pit of seeds. Studies have revealed that plant extracts exhibit medicinal properties. This paper reviews the nutritional and medicinal properties of the plant and its commercial applications.
