Phytochemical Composition of Salvia candidissima Vahl. ssp. occidentalis From Turkey

Abstract Salvia is the largest genus of the Lamiaceae family, representing approximately 1000 species and possessing a high rate of endemism all over the world. S. candidissima Vahl. ssp. occidentalis is a herbaceous perennial native throughout Turkey. This study aimed to estimate the phytochemical composition of S. candidissima Vahl. ssp. occidentalis. The main constituents were sclareol (35.24 %), spathulenol (7.98 %), and caryophyllene oxide (6.64 %), among the detected 45 constituents representing 97.65 % of the total essential oil content. Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were determined in the 70 % and 95 % ethanol extracts of the plant. The total phenolic content was higher in 95 % ethanol extract (25.16 mg equivalent of gallic acid per g dry weight (dw)). The antioxidant activity of the ethanol extracts was determined using four antioxidant assays, including methods based on radical scavenging activity and methal reducing capacity, respectively (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and CUPRAC assays). Among the samples, 70 % ethanol extract exhibited the highest CUPRAC activity (670.39 mM TE/g dw) followed by DPPH radical scavenging activity of 95 % ethanol extract (275.67 mM TE/g dw).
