Fire safety is the key to ammonium nitrate explosion safety

A strategy is formulated on how ammonium nitrate safety may be improved with regards to explosions. It is shown that, for ammonium nitrate in storage or in transport (as distinguished from manufacturing activities), there has been only one cause of explosions—uncontrolled fire. It is also identified that, given an uncontrolled fire impinging on a stock of ammonium nitrate, there is a 30% probability of explosion and a 15% probability of loss of life. These facts then clearly indicate that eliminating the potential for uncontrolled fires will eliminate the potential for explosion of ammonium nitrate in storage or in transport. It is shown that precluding the potential for fires is not difficult, given appropriate building construction and operating procedures. Finally, some additional safety factors are identified, as are safety factors which have been proposed, but are not technically sound.
