Abstract

The chromosomes of Melinopterus villarreali (Baraud, 1975) have been reinvestigated based on new material from Meia Praia, Portugal. It was found that all the specimens examined, including two with completely dark clypei, were referable to M. villarreali. No M. sphacelatus (Panzer, 1798) was found. Many of the specimens had the eighth elytral striae distinctly abbreviated basally, atypical of M. sphacelatus group species. Because of this the karyotypes of M. villarreali and M. tingens (Reitter, 1892) have been reinvestigated, and it was found that in M. tingens the size decrease between autosomes 1 and 2 was greater than in M. villarreali.
