The role of molybdate‐containing inhibitors in cases of stress corrosion cracking in closed water circuits

In this study, three cases of damage to heating circuits are presented, in which damage was caused by intergranular stress corrosion cracking in an unalloyed steel. The results are compared with literature data. From this, it can be concluded that stress corrosion cracking has been triggered in all three cases by the addition of an inhibitor containing molybdate. The development of this form of corrosion is only possible under critical conditions.
