THz PAM-4 signal generation by a modulator driven by binary scheme with different driving voltages

Abstract We propose a novel method of THz 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signal generation by a modulator driven by binary scheme with different driving voltages without a digital-to-analog converter (DAC). We experimentally demonstrate the transmission over 1-m wireless link employing 4-GBaud PAM-4 signal at 400–450-GHz in the photonics aided wireless terahertz-wave system. A cost-effective solution to THz PAM-4 signal generation is proposed with both low power consumption and simple configuration.
