New insight on critical Hamaker constant of solid materials

Abstract Hamaker constant, A, is an important parameter for describing the strength of van der Waals interaction of substances and determinable by using different methods. Wetting is a possible and simple method as comparing with others, however, this method determined A value was varied with employed liquid number for one solid material. A wetting-based process for determining the unique critical Hamaker constant, AC, for one solid material was introduced. By taking the probe liquids with known Hamaker constant, AL, to vs. the known wetting parameters, e.g. cos, for one solid material, the AL-cosθ plot was presented then the similarly as the Zisman plot to extrapolate the presented linear fit to the critical wetting condition, cosθ=l, the AC was determinable. A comparison of this unique AC with different probe liquids devoted AS found that the former has expected advantages in ignoring the liquid number variety and united all employed probes resulted latter for representing one solid material. In order to prove the validity, this work used all data were directly cited from literature and the application related different materials.
