Probing the excellence of wastewater PAHs removal approaches: A critical review

The present review focus on the evaluation of various available polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) treatment methods used in wastewater management. The basic principles and background removal mechanisms and recent development in PAHs removal practice are also summarized. The comprehensive information regarding sources, distribution, classification, physicochemical properties, PAHs toxicity for humans and aquatics life, conventional treatment processes, and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) given here may help to understand the PAHs problem and its severity. As for treatment is a concern, all aspects of performance efficiency, suitability, high rate of degradability as well as regeneration of the process are evaluated in detail. Finally, based on the given evidence, the AOPs coupled with catalysts have been evaluated as the most effective method for wastewater PAHs treatment.
