Silver Nanoparticles Stabilized with Chitosan Succinamide: Synthesis and Antibacterial Activity

Abstract

A water-soluble chitosan derivative, chitosan succinamide, was used as a polymer matrix for the formation of silver nanoparticles via ion reduction under microwave irradiation in the presence of a D-glucose reducing agent. UV spectroscopy confirmed the presence of silver nanoparticles in the synthesized colloidal solution. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the synthesized silver nanoparticles had a spherical shape. The obtained diffractograms confirm the presence of reflexes characteristic of the crystal lattice of metallic silver. In vitro studies showed that the synthesized colloidal solution of silver nanoparticles exhibits pronounced antibacterial activity against strains of the gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 and Bacillus coagulans 429.
