The Industrial Research Institute (IRI) announced the winners of its prestigious Holland Award at its Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 2, 2019. The award went to Robert G. Cooper, Crawford Fellow of the Product Development and Management Association, and Anita Friis Sommer, senior innovation manager in Operations at LEGO Group. The winning article, “Agile–Stage-Gate for Manufacturers: Changing the Way Products Are Developed,” was published in the March/April 2018 edition of RTM. The article describes a product development process that combines a Stage-Gate process with approaches from Agile methodology. The article is a follow-up to Sommer’s 2015 article “Improved Product Development through Agile/Stage-Gate Hybrids,” which won the 2016 Holland Award. The hybrid model provides a way for physical product manufacturers to adopt the highly productive methods of Agile product development, which originated in the software industry. The 2019 award was the third for Cooper and the second for Sommer. In accepting the Holland Award, Cooper and Sommer join many other accomplished recipients, including John Seely Brown, who received the award for his 1998 paper, “Seeing Differently: A Role for Pioneering Research,” and William Banholzer, for his 2010 paper “Creating Value in Turbulent Times.” The Maurice Holland Award recognizes the best papers published in the previous volume year of RTM and honors IRI’s founder, Maurice Holland. The award, which is awarded at the Annual Conference for papers published during the previous year, has traditionally been a crystal replica of a World War I “Jenny,” symbolizing the spirit and dynamism of IRI founder Maurice Holland, who flew a Jenny during the war. A new award design was introduced in 2019.
