As this special issue went to press, the field of educational neuroscience lost one of its greatest visionaries – Dr. Helen Neville, Founding Director of the Brain Development Lab and Professor Emerita at the University of Oregon. Helen is widely recognized as one of the most influential and visionary cognitive neuroscientists of her time. Her pioneering work on the plasticity of the developing brain helped establish the field of developmental cognitive neuroscience, and her collaborative research with educators advanced the field of educational neuroscience. Her vast program of research cut across multiple levels of analysis. Helen employed both behavioral and neuroscience methodologies to study cerebral organization in infants, children, and adults, including individuals with different sensory and/or language experiences. She published over 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters on topics ranging from the neural systems recruited during sign language processing to the development of interventions for children living in poverty. Helen will be remembered by those who worked with her as an innovative risk-taker, fiercely committed to using critical, evidence-based thinking to address broader societal issues. Over the last 15 years of her career, Helen collaborated with local Head Start programs supporting families with preschool children living in poverty. Drawing on decades of basic research on the development of selective attention, she helped design and assess family-based programs to improve children’s developing attention skills. Her vision extended beyond small-scale research studies to include authentic education settings and cultural adaptations, both locally and internationally.
