Dimensioning and shaping of inductors for power converters

Abstract The increase in active component switching frequency, via GaN technology, allows downscaling the inductor size as soon as the magnetic core-losses are controlled. However frequency induced dissipations in the magnetic material will create thermal heating, consequently complex core shapes allowing a better thermal exchange are needed. Here we propose a specific dimensioning methodology to determine the best form factor to optimise the exchange surface and verify constraints on the inductor. An inductor made of NiZn spinel ferrite powder has been manufactured by tape casting using results of calculations based on magnetic core-loss measurements.
