Computational Creativity (CC) combines elements of Artificial Intelligence (AI), cognitive science, philosophy andart in order tobuild and study computational systemswhichmodel or display “creative” behaviours. In recent years, there has been a significant public-interest rise in AI, and while this hype has been the source of delight for technology journalists and others, it has been resulting in new challenges for the technologists, industry, scientists and academics to pace themselves with the rising demand to “include” AI in new products and research. Understandably, CC is largely impacted with the progress in AI, which is one of the key areas providing the necessary tools facilitating the generation of “creativity”; albeit still far from the strong notion of creativity (al-Rifaie & Bishop, 2015), this field has been growing steadily with more researchers joining the community, and the well-established conferences (in addition to the CC-dedicated ones) providing platforms for the exchange of ideas. Given themultidisciplinary andmultifacetednature of CC andparticipants’ diverse background, heated debates have set themselves as the inevitable and integral parts of events on this domain. Despite the surge in the use of digital tools in creative production in CC, researchers are actively pursuing, not only the technical state-of-the-art in CC, but also the theoretical and philosophical implications; this is thanks to the ability of the computationally “creative” systems which are able to provide a new lens for scientists, philosophers, technologists, creative practitioners and the general public to explore notions of creativity and artificial intelligence. This special issue journal, Computational Creativity: Automation or Collaboration, groups together a few invited work, stemming from the 2017 Convention of the Society for the Study of Artificial Intelligence and the Simulation of Behaviour (AISB) which was held at the University of Bath, UK, and focuses on the collaboration between human and machine as well as the attempt to automate (or interact with) the process in the context of computational creativity.1 The first work, “Towards Transformational Creation of Novel Songs”, elaborates on its attempt to study transformational computational creativity in the context of song writing, as well as a system capable of altering its own goals and operations. This work, elegantly looks at CC and song generation through three broad yet connected perspectives of: the output of the application and its challenges; the technical aspects through constraint programming; and the conceptual parts where the system is provided with some agency and responsibility with regard to setting its own search space and goals. In “Dynamic Emphatical Narration for Reduced Authorial Burden and Increased User Freedom in Interactive Storytelling”, the authors present solutions based on dynamic narration in the context of interactive storytelling systems, where the main challenge is to grant the author the ability to maintain some control over the process
