Establishment of two native shrubby species in a degraded soil site in semiarid Central Mexico

Abstract The selection of plants for the restoration of degraded sites, the growth and survival of two shrub species in a soil degraded by construction rubble was evaluated. Two experiments were carried out, one in situ, and the other under greenhouse conditions. In the perturbed site, Zaluzania augusta had 62.8% survival, and grew 2.68 cm taller than Karwinskia humboldtiana. In greenhouse conditions, seedlings of K. humboldtiana, unlike those of Z. augusta, did not survive the experimental period on perturbed soil. In general Z. augusta had better results than Karwinskia humboldtiana and could be recommended to restoration in semiarid degraded sites.
