Noise reduction technologies for aircraft landing gear-A bibliographic review

Abstract As a main contributor to aircraft noise at approach to landing, landing gear noise is currently a major research interest amongst aeronautical engineers and aeroacoustic researchers. Numerous technologies have been proposed for the abatement of landing gear noise. This paper presents a bibliographical review of such technologies for landing gear noise reduction, taking the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) into consideration. Noise treatment technologies applied directly to the landing gear include fairings, component optimisation, hole coverings, flow blowing and plasma actuators. The associated landing gear wheel bay has also been investigated with liners and leading edge control. Technologies currently at the conceptual design stage or proposed for noise reduction in other engineering fields but which have application potential for landing gears are also introduced. These include bio-inspired solutions, vortex generators, boundary layer suction, trailing edge serrations, and surface perturbation techniques. The combined use of different noise treatment technologies reported in open publications is also presented.
