Adapting the roadmapping approach to science-intensive organizations: Lessons from a drug development program for neglected diseases

Abstract This paper discusses a roadmapping approach (RMA) adopted on a program on drug discovery and development for neglected diseases. This experience led to changes in traditional RMA that revealed special potential for science-intensive environments: (i) conduct the roadmapping process in parallel for alternative areas of interest; (ii) start the roadmapping process by focusing on the consolidated technological paths; (iii) construct roadmaps to highlight organizational strengths and weaknesses; and (iv) consider the sectoral contingencies to enhance the managerial approaches. Among the implications, some literature paradigms are contrasted by contingency adapting RMA, changing workshop dynamics; and adopting a slow inside-out strategizing approach.
