Equisetites spatulatus Zeiller, 1895 is only found in Late Carboniferous deposits in France. The uninervous leaves with spatulate shaped tip forming a sheath are the only characters used to define this species. We consider the isolated incomplete, leaf sheath with rarely preserved spatulate shaped tips on which the diagnosis is based, a too poor argument to maintain Espatulatus as a valid species. New samples and two syntypes were examined and allowed to provide a new description and illustrations. Nevertheless, at the present time, the peculiar leaves cannot be attributed with great certainty to any other Equisetophyta nor to other group. Damages due to taphonomy may explain the different forms of leaves on the specimens. The validity of other Carboniferous Equisetites can also be discussed on the base of the same assumptions.
