Studies on the electro-mechanical polishing effects of titanium alloy with ion-exchange resin solid particles

Abstract Recently it is emerging to a green electro-mechanical polishing method with ion-exchange resin solid particles saturating with acid electrolyte for metallic parts. The paper utilized this process for polishing Ti6Al4V alloy samples and investigated the changes of subsequent surface morphology and electrochemical property. Surface roughness of the polished specimens decreased apparently. However, there appeared local corrosion pits when the polishing time surpassed 1 h. Electrochemical analysis of polished samples shows that the corrosion potential shifts positively and then negatively and the polishing process can be regarded as a concurrent process of titanium oxide film growth, dissolution and wear in the conditions of the electric field.
