When I was an engineering student, during the 1960s, a common joke was that if a space rocket reached its goal, it was called a success of science; but if it did not succeed, then it was a failure of engineering. This witticism is a sample of the latent dispute between science and engineering. Science has played a fundamental role in the development of modern engineering by showing how the natural world behaves, but this does not mean that engineering lacks strong autonomous and original features, and the field can be reduced to a mere corollary of science. In fact, technology, and its most elaborate form, engineering, appeared many millennia before science did. In this article, the question of the relationship between engineering and science is discussed, and contributions from some new points of view are made.
