Vitis vinifera (Grapevine) lncRNAs are potential regulators of response to necrotrophic fungus, Botrytis cinerea infection

Abstract lncRNAs regulate gene expression at both transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Using computational strategy, we identified 47 and 179 V. vinifera lncRNAs and protein coding sequences, respectively in response to necrotrophic fungus- Botrytis cinerea (gray mold). Co-expression analysis-driven functional annotation revealed their association with GO terms for ‘response to stress’, ‘response to biotic stimulus’, ‘defense response to fungus’, etc. Potential involvement of lncRNAs was also observed in key pathways such as stilbenoid biosynthesis, glutathione metabolism, and chitin degradation. Overall, our results indicate that lncRNAs along with other regulators like miRNAs help in modulating plant basal defense response against necrotrophic fungi.
