500 Hz, 47.1 mJ, sub-nanosecond MOPA laser system

A high-pulse-energy, sub-nanosecond master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser system at 1.06 μm was demonstrated. The thermal effect in laser diode-side-pumped module was studied numerically and experimentally. The master oscillator was an electro-optically Q-switched laser with a pulse width of ~730 ps. Using an end-pumped preamplifier and two-stage side-pumped amplifiers, laser pulses with a pulse energy of 47.1 mJ were obtained at a repetition rate of 500 Hz, corresponding to a peak power of ~64.5 MW. The coefficient of variation of the pulse train was ~4.9%.
