Degradation effect of carbonation on electrochemical behavior of 2304 duplex stainless steel in simulated concrete pore solutions

Abstract This study described the impact of carbonation on passivation of 2304 duplex stainless steel (DSS) in alkaline solutions simulating concrete pore environment. Also, the chloride-induced corrosion behavior and the pitting corrosion resistance of 2304 DSS were evaluated in carbonated solutions. It was highlighted that the electrochemical performance of 2304 DSS was remarkably affected by carbonation in terms of passivation capability, passive film properties (thickness, morphology and composition) and chloride-induced corrosion morphology. The degradation mechanism of carbonation on passivation of 2304 DSS in alkaline solutions was proposed, as well as the corrosion mechanism induced by combined carbonation and chlorides.
