This study from Michele Galizia and colleagues on page 2547 sets forth a multiscale method to investigate the molecular mechanism of polybenzimidazole (PBI) plasticization upon exposure to organic species, which is of great relevance in applications such as Organic Solvent Reverse Osmosis and Nanofiltration. “Competitive hydrogen bonding” is what ultimately causes PBI plasticization. According to this mechanism, methanol molecules disrupt the hydrogen bonded network of dry PBI by forming mutual polymer/penetrant hydrogen bonds, which enhances polymer chain mobility.
