C3N4 nanosheets loaded with the CuWO4 activated NiS co-catalyst: A stable noble metal-free photocatalyst with dramatic photocatalytic activity for H2 generation and high salinity tolerant

Herein, CuWO4 loaded C3N4 nanosheets were prepared, and then NiS nanoclusters were introduced on the C3N4 nanosheets using CuWO4 as intermediaries to obtain NiS nanoclusters loaded C3N4 nanosheets. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic performance of the aforesaid C3N4 nanosheets loaded with NiS nanoclusters was evaluated for light-driven H2 production. The results reveal that the photocatalytic performance of C3N4 can be significantly strengthened through the above-mentioned approach. The obtained NiS loaded C3N4 nanosheets are a noble metal-free photocatalyst with dramatic activity for photocatalytic H2 generation. The fastest H2 evolution rate can be up to 17 μmol h-1 over the aforementioned photocatalyst. This remarkable boosting might be mainly ascribed to the activation of CuWO4 on NiS co-catalyst. If the NiS nanoclusters are directly loaded on the C3N4 nanosheets, the evolution rate of H2 is only 0.27 μmol h-1 over the C3N4 nanosheets directly loaded with NiS nanoclusters, which is 1.6 percent of that over the C3N4 nanosheets loaded with NiS nanoclusters using CuWO4 as intermediaries. Besides, the as-prepared NiS nanoclusters loaded C3N4 nanosheets possess satisfactory salinity tolerant. When seawater was utilized, the H2 evolution rate of 4.9 μmol h-1 can be achieved.
