Structure design of polysaccharides - chemoselective sulfoethylation of chitosan

Abstract The commercially feasible heterogeneous sulfoethylation of chitosan with sodium vinyl sulfonate (NaVS) in the presence of sodium hydroxide and isopropanol as slurry medium yields an O-selective reaction. The total degree of substitution (DS) in the range from 0.1 to 0.5 could be controlled by the molar ratio of NaVS per repeating unit and the concentration of the aqueous NaOH. It turned out that the conversion with NaVS was more efficient compared to the reaction with sodium 2-bromoethylsulfonate under slightly acidic conditions, however, a N-selective sulfoethylation could be realized. Both types of selectively functionalized sulfoethyl chitosans (SECh) were characterized by means of 13C NMR spectroscopy and they possess different pH depending solubility.
