Abstract The unified design provisions for large-diameter circular concrete-filled thin-walled steel tubular (CFTST) column to steel beam connections are urgently needed for high-rise buildings, as the current Chinese code GB 50936–2013 is inadequate due to the limiting ratio of beam flange width to column diameter rwd = 0.25–0.75 and the limiting ratio of column diameter to steel wall thickness D/t = 25–50. To address this issue, five CFTST column to steel beam connection specimens were designed and tested under cyclic loading, having the rwd = 0.2–0.4 and D/t = 83.3. The test results indicate that large-diameter CFTST column to steel beam connections with diaphragm have good ductility, high deformation capacity, and high energy dissipation ability. The method for calculating the width of diaphragm specified in the Chinese code GB 50936–2013 is found to be inadequate for the CFTST column to steel beam connections with exterior diaphragm when rwd is smaller than 0.25 and for further improvement the diaphragm moment should be considered, especially for the connections with rwd
