A new study on magnetic liquid slurry in rotating magnetic fields when polishing advanced ceramic material ZrO2

ABSTRACT In this paper, the self-forming processes of polishing tools used by a mixture of magnetic liquid slurry (MLS) under the effect of rotating magnetic fields are first clarified. Then, the effect of magnetic fields to forming time and the final shape of the MLS mixture has been studied and applied during the polishing process. Polishing to create the surface of advanced ceramic material ZrO2 with high quality and efficiency has been conducted by the authors. The finishing surface roughness (Ra) was obtained in nm form and undamaged after machining by magnetic polishing process. A superfine surface when polishing ceramic material ZrO2 created after 30 min of polishing with Ra = 0.702 nm was repeated many times in the experiments. Polishing by MLS mixtures is an appropriate and effective method to perfect advanced ceramic material ZrO2 surface and other materials, which are difficult to process.
