Diffuse and Volume Discharges in High-Pressure Gas Lasers Pumped by Transverse Discharge (A Review)

Abstract

Consideration is given to the formation of conditions and parameters of diffuse and volume discharges, which are widely used for laser generation in VUV, UV, visible and IR spectral ranges in different high-pressure gases and gas mixtures. It was found that spectral parameters of volume and diffuse discharges are similar. The difference between these discharge modes is found to be associated with the conditions of their formation. The diffuse discharges are formed due to runaway electrons, for which one or two electrodes with a small radius of curvature are used. To form volume discharges, it is necessary to carry out preionization of the discharge gap using an additional source, as well as to ensure a uniform electric field between the electrodes.
