Control of full absorption with functional materials and silicon carbide gratings

We have proposed a novel silicon carbide (SiC) grating with vanadium dioxide (VO2) composite. Polarization-dependent surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs) can be excited. The device switches on/off light by switching the VO2 between its metallic and semiconductor states. Coupled wave analysis (RCWA) method is used to simulate the optical responses under different conditions. By introducing the structure of VO2 as an active material, this switchable, tunable, wavelength-selective structure can pave the way toward the ultimate control of thermal absorption/emissivity in the atmospheric window (8–14 μm).
