Neutron Beta Decay in a Thermal Field and Neutron Anomaly

Abstract

The effect of photobeta decay and inverse internal bremsstrahlung on natural neutron beta decay is studied. These two processes make it possible to take into account the effect of the thermal field of the medium on beta decay and complement the natural beta decay process involving the emission of leptons—an electron and an antineutrino. It is shown that, at room temperature, the thermal effect on neutron beta decay is negligible. However, neutron decay in strongly heated massive-star matter may proceed at an enhanced rate. This may affect rates of reactions involving neutrons in the synthesis of chemical elements in stellar matter.
