Evaluation of DNA intercalation study and biological profile of a series of Schiff base metal(II) complexes derived from amino acid

Abstract

The synthesis of 4 new Schiff base based ternary metal (II) complexes from taurine and (1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy phenyl)-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione) in liquid state is reported herein. The as synthesized metal complexes of nickel, copper, cobalt, and zinc were characterized by spectrum-analytical techniques like proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and UV-Visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis). The magnetic moment and molar conductivity measurements were also analyzed. DNA interaction of Cu(II), Ni (II), Zn(II), and Co(II) complexes were investigated by means of absorption titration, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and viscosity analysis. These metal complexes demonstrated good results of interaction with calf thymus (CT) with DNA (via intercalation mode). The synthesized metal complexes and the ligands were screened for antimicrobial activity (in vitro) against the bacterial and fungal species such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli by well diffusion method.
