The effect of inner-shell photodetachment channels on outer-shell photodetachment is investigated using the R -matrix method. The simplest multishell closed-shell negative ion, Li − , is examined near the 1 s detachment threshold and the results show that the interchannel coupling significantly alters the shapes and magnitudes of the valence photodetachment cross sections in this energy region.
