Optimization of growth performance responses of Japanese quail with different concentrations of metabolizable energy, lysine, and sulfur amino acids using Taguchi method

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of metabolizable energy (ME), Lys, and Met + Cys on the growth performance of Japanese quail breeder, hatching eggs, and production performance of their offsprings by Taguchi method. Total of 630 Japanese quails (6-wk-old) were randomly distributed between 9 experimental treatments with 5 replicates (14 quails in each cage) per treatment for 9 wk. The dietary treatments, including 3 different ME concentrations (2,700, 2,850, and 3,000 kcal/kg), 3 different concentrations of Lys (0.88, 1.00, and 1.12%), and 3 different concentrations of Met + Cys (0.65, 0.75, and 0.85%), were used in L9 (33) orthogonal array layout. Egg production, feed intake, egg weight, and feed conversion ratio were recorded and calculated biweekly. At the end of the wk 13, 14, and 15, of age of quail breeder, hatchability, and the average weight of offspring were recorded. First group of hatched chicks were raised under a standard condition with the common diet for 12 d. Results showed that quails fed the diet containing 3,000 kcal ME/kg, 1.12% Lys, and 0.85% Met + Cys had the greatest feed intake, egg production, egg weight, hatchability, and the lowest feed conversion ratio throughout the study. For the offspring, the best growth rate was also achieved by feeding the diet containing 3,000 kcal ME/kg, 1.12% Lys, and 0.85% Met + Cys to japanese quail breeders. The results of this study showed that the Taguchi method could be used successfully toestimate ME, Lys, and Met + Cys requirements of quail breeder, and their offspring.
