Abstract The micro heat pipe cooled reactor system with high efficiency energy conversion units are potential candidates for the energy support in decentralized markets, such as oceanic activities and remote regions. However, its development has been limited by several unfavorable factors. In this work, the potential opportunities and challenges of micro nuclear power system with high efficiency energy conversion units are analyzed systematically. Suggestions for future work are also proposed.
