The EGO (Enforced Geometry Optimization) method provides a theoretical description of structural changes in molecules imposed by external forces. Brzyska and Wolinski present the application of EGO to predict enforced conformational changes in heterooligomers of the heteropolysaccharide nigeran, found in the cell wall of Aspergillus niger. Single‐molecule atomic force microscopy (AFM) can be used to study such structural changes; however, correct interpretation of AFM experimental data is often a difficult task. The authors find that the location of the sugar unit in the polysaccharide chain largely dictates the conformational properties and the results may help analyse AFM data in the future. (DOI:10.1002 / bip.23357)
