Surface Tension and Density of Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether–Water Mixtures from 277.15 to 308.15 K

Surface tension at 277.15, 283.15, 288.15, 293.15, 298.15, and 303.15 K and density at 277.15, 283.15, 288.15, 293.15, 298.15, 303.15, and 308.15 K for ethylene glycol monobutyl ether–water mixtures were measured. Experimental surface tension vs concentration data was described utilizing the Volmer surface equation of state, coupled with the Gibbs adsorption isotherm, which provides two nonempirical fitted parameters: the activity coefficient at infinite dilution of the bulk and the two-dimensional virial coefficient. Density experimental data shows negative excess volume deviations through all composition range, with abnormal behavior around 0.02 in mole fraction of the solute, which tends to diminish as temperature increases. A Redlich–Kister type model for strongly associated components was used to describe excess volume behavior.
