Outbreaks of corallivorous gastropods, such as Drupella spp. (Neogastropoda: Muricidae), are well documented as leading causes of coral mortality. Recent years have provided numerous records of outbreaks of Drupella spp. worldwide, impacting the resilience of coral reefs (McClanahan, 1994; Cumming, 2009; Kaullysing et al., 2017; Scott et al., 2017b). Drupella spp. are obligate corallivores having a preferential diet of stressed live scleractinian coral tissue, especially acroporids (Morton, Blackmore & Kwok, 2002; Rotjan & Lewis, 2008; Al-Horani, Hamdi & Al-Rousan, 2011). These snails, which are known to be attracted to conspecifics and the chemical cues in mucus secreted by stressed or damaged corals, often form dense aggregations (Morton et al., 2002; Moerland, Scott & Hoeksema, 2016). Following extensive bleaching events, Drupella spp. have been reported to shift their dietary preference temporarily from branching acroporids to solitary fungiids (Hoeksema, Scott & True, 2013).
