Spontaneous formation and mechanism of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria in swine wastewater treatment system

Abstract The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process is a new and cost-effective green technology for inorganic nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Red activated sludge granules were found in a swine wastewater treatment system of Guangdong Province using two-stage A/O processes. In order to test the anammox process in the wastewater treatment system, both practical and simulation experiments were conducted, including water quality determination, nitrogen balance, 15N isotope tracing and 16S rRNA sequencing. The results showed that inorganic nitrogen and NH4+-N were removed from the first-stage aerobic tank by 94% and 99.99%, respectively.
