Novel Fabrication Method for Nested Saddle-Coils

The generation and measurement of static and time-varying magnetic fields using electromagnetic coils is a common method in various fields. Multiple applications require special geometries, e.g., complex structures on curved surfaces. The fabrication of such complex saddle coils on curved surfaces without special equipment is challenging and requires time-consuming techniques and lot of experience to produce coils with high accuracy. The novel approach uses dedicated slits in a tubular structure to guide and self-fixate the windings of the desired coil structure and allows a fast and easy fabrication with high accuracy and without special skills. In this article, an introduction into the basic idea is given followed by a generalization for arbitrary nested saddle-coil structures. Finally, a first 3-D printed prototype is presented.
