Inverse Design of a Taper by Scatter Search Metaheuristic

This paper deals with the optimization of photonic structures, specifically waveguide couplers between a continuous waveguide (CWG) and a periodically segmented waveguide (PSW). For this purpose, a numerical technique called finite element method (FEM) is used in conjunction with an adapted optimization technique called Scatter Search (SS). In this work the possibilities of finding high coupling efficiencies are extended through the creation of adaptations to the Scatter Search algorithm and the enormous amount of solutions generated to be evaluated by such procedure. The results have showed that the adaptation of the technique is valid for optimization of tapers.
