Improved Direction of Arrival Estimation under Grazing Incidence Conditions using 2D-Uniform Linear Array

In this work, we tackle the difficulty of direction-of-arrival estimation (DOA) for a uniform linear array (ULA). Furthermore, a spectrum estimation method using a new two-dimensional (2D) ULA is devised. This 2D-ULA conquers the ULA’s inability to estimate the narrow-band sources impinging at grazing incidence. This configuration has doubly crossed ULAs and hence has an array size equals to 2L, where L is the array element. We use the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm for the estimation of DOAs. This proposed method is dubbed as “2D-ULA-MUSIC” which has the potential to reliably estimate the direction-of-arrivals (DOAs) which are close to an array end-fire. A comprehensive study between the proposed method and the other popular few popular methods is conducted employing simulations over a different number of scatterers, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and several samples (snapshots). Computer simulations show that the proposed method circumvents the problem of ULA in many scenarios.
