Engineering resistance to Alternaria cyamopsidis by RNAi mediated gene silencing of chitin synthase export chaperone CHS7 in guar

Abstract Minimal natural resistance in guar against Alternaria cyamopsidis blight or leaf spots requires the need to develop improved cultivars with high level of resistance. In this study, we report the silencing of AcCHS7 gene with pSilentCHS7-2 and pARTCHS7 constructs in Alternaria pathogen and guar plants of HG 2–20 variety, respectively. The down-regulation of AcCHS7 delays the disease progression in guar by damaging the hyphae, reducing mycelium growth and conidiation in Alternaria. Hence, this study demonstrates the role of host induced post-transcriptional gene silencing of AcCHS7 as an effective approach to increase the guar productivity by developing resistance against Alternaria cyamopsidis.
