Lipid-based drug delivery systems (LBDDS) have been used for multiple applications, such as controlled release, taste masking, and improved swallowability, among others. Various preparation techniques have evolved over the past decade, including agitation using magnetic stirrers to continuous manufacturing processes, such as hot melt extrusion (HME) with melt mixing of lipid excipients. Melt extrusion has gained attention as a lipid-processing technique because it is cost-effective, scalable, compliant, and ecofriendly method. In this review, we discuss different approaches for developing lipid formulations using melt extrusion along with various process variables.
