Asymmetric Second-Harmonic Generation with High Efficiency from a Non-chiral Hybrid Bilayer Complementary Metasurface

Asymmetric optical responses of photonic systems for forward and backward incidences are of great importance for practical applications. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate second-harmonic generation (SHG) with high contrast of harmonic generation efficiency for forward/backward pumping in non-chiral nanostructures. Hybrid metasurfaces consisting of dielectric nanodisks and their complementary plasmonic nanostructures exhibit strongly asymmetric and highly efficient SHG. Numerical results show that the SHG efficiency of 0.57 × 10−3% can be obtained for forward pumping with such a metasurface made of lithium niobate and gold. This value of SHG efficiency is 53 times higher than the case of backward pumping, revealing strongly asymmetric SHG.
