Abstract Detection of essential heavy metal ions for human biology and the environment is an important research area in recent decades. Iron is the most important and fundamental metal ions among all of them. There are lots of hits of references for the chemo and fluoro sensors for any particular metal ion. We have tried to organized important iron chemo and fluorosensor references for discussion and sum up in an arranged way according to the moieties and structures. In this review, we have discussed more than ninety different iron references for the detection of heavy metal ions with specific reference to iron.
