Development of Eu-doped Sr2MgSi2O7 single crystalline scintillators

Abstract Undoped and Eu-doped Sr2MgSi2O7 single crystals were synthesized using the optical Floating Zone method, and the photoluminescence and scintillation properties were evaluated. A broad emission band at 470 nm is observed in the Eu-doped samples in photoluminescence and scintillation spectra. The decay curves demonstrate that it is due to the 5d–4f transition of Eu2+. The 2.0% and 5.0% Eu-doped samples show the highest scintillation light yield of 10,400 ph/MeV under γ–rays irradiation from 57Co, and the best afterglow level of 50 ppm among the present samples, respectively.
