Depositional environments and its evolution during the last marine highstand along the La Plata estuary using Neohelice granulata (Decapoda: Brachyura: Varunidae) as a tool

Abstract Six well-preserved partial specimens of the varunid crab Neohelice granulata Dana1851, from the mid-Holocene, Villa Soriano Formation, Playa Pascual site (Uruguay) are described, constituting the northernmost fossil record so far. These specimens allow a review of the depositional environment and evolution of fossil assemblages and modern populations of N. granulata. The relatively good state of preservation of the material suggests death within their burrows or closely associated with them, and most of the preserved exoskeletal elements possess sufficient anatomical information to diagnose N. granulata as the producer of the assemblage. Complete material from the mid-Holocene of Pereyra Iraola Park, northeastern Buenos Aires, Argentina (located in the opposite side of the La Plata estuary) suggests that fossil assemblages of this crab represent a concentration of the record. This study also suggests that the fossil assemblages described so far were deposited in a low sedimentary rate depositional environment during the last marine highstand and that fluvial channel constituted temporary water bodies.
